The Embarcadero waterfront, steeped in history, offers panoramic views of the skyline and the bay. Created after the 1915 World’s Fair, it was Northern California’s shipping center until the 1950’s when everything moved to Oakland. During WW2, it was the major military port in the
war in the Pacific. After the building of the Bay Bridge and the Embarcadero freeway, the area declined. Damage from the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake led to the freeway being razed in 1991. That demolition spurred renewed redevelopment, resulting in a scenic tree-lined boulevard with parks, businesses and plazas. San Francisco expert Craig Smith will lead us through this fascinating area via motorcoach and on foot to see the Ferry Building, several piers, Levi Plaza, Giants’ Oracle Park, a floating firehouse and more. Lunch is on your own at the Ferry Building.

Depart at 8:00 a.m. from the Davis Target parking lot, 8:20 a.m. from University Retirement Community and 9 a.m. from Fairfield Lowes. Return to Davis Target around 6 p.m.

Activity Level: 2 (1.75 walking tour, on and off the bus a total of six times)
