For more than 900 years, Cistercian abbeys around the world have been oases of prayer, work, beauty, silence and light. We will visit a rural Trappist monastery with a restored 12th-century Chapter House. The Chapter House, with its amazing triple-arched Gothic entry, is the oldest building in the U.S. west of the Mississippi. We will tour the church, observe the monks in a brief prayer session, and have time to explore the grounds or partake in an optional wine tasting. We will have a late lunch in Orland at the Hive, with its fresh farm-to-fork dishes, a working beehive, and adjacent Bees to Blooms gift shop.
Optional Wine Tasting: In the winery adjacent to the abbey, a fifth-generation winemaker and this community of Trappist-Cistercian monks create handcrafted, award-winning wines. With a focus on quality and sustainability, New Clairvaux Vineyard produces a variety of notable and unique wines. The tasting will include five different wines. The $10 tasting fee, which is payable at the winery, is waived with the purchase of a bottle of wine. There is no seating for the wine tasting; wine will be poured at stand-up bars.
NOTE: lunch will be late (2:15 p.m.), so bring a snack to enjoy while at the Abbey

Pick-Up/Drop-Off: Depart 8:30 a.m. from Davis Target and 8:50 a.m. from University Retirement Community. Return to URC at 5:00 p.m. and to Target at 5:15 p.m.
Activity Level: 1.5 (one-hour walking tour with seating available)
Cancellations: Cancellations received by August 30 will receive a full refund. Cancellations received after that date will only receive a refund if your space can be filled from the waiting list.
COVID Policies: Travelers must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccine; if we do not already have a copy of your vaccine card on file, upload it when registering online, email it to us at DavisTravelaires@gmail.com, or send it to the Travelaires office, 646 A Street, Davis CA 95616. You will only need to do this once, as we will keep the documentation on file.
Masks requirements will be determined one week prior to the trip. Bring a copy of your vaccination card and a photo ID, as some venues require proof of vaccination upon entry.
