Angel Island, the "Ellis Island of the West," has a rich history, having served as an immigration processing station between 1910 and 1940, primarily for Japanese and Chinese immigrants, and as a military installation from the Civil War through World War II. This trip includes a short ferry ride from Tiburon to the island, a narrated tram tour to gain insights to the island’s past, and a walking tour of the immigration station to learn the stories of the people housed there and view the poignant Chinese poetry etched on the walls. Our trip will end with lunch at the island’s dockside café, with time to enjoy the views or visit the gift shop.
Depart 7:40 a.m. from Davis Target and 8:00 a.m. from University Retirement Community. Return in reverse at approximately 4:45 and 5 p.m.
Activity Level: 2 (one-hour walking tour at immigration station)
