Trip Reports

"Dear San Francisco" at Club Fugazi, April 21

We enjoyed a fast-paced show powered by exhilarating acrobatics, spoken word, video projections, shadow play, and original music performed by an international cast of world-class acrobats. The strength, flexibility, and agility displayed by the artists was simply amazing. The show plays every Wednesday through Sunday in San Francisco. Great Bear Vineyards, June 1

We learned about Great Bear Vineyard's family-run operations and sustainably-grown practices in a wonderful educational talk by owner Marcus Meadows-Smith. After the talk, we tasted five of Great Bear's award-winning wines, accompanied by beautiful individual charcuterie assortments of cheese, cold cuts, grapes, nuts, and chocolate. Great Bear is located on the norhern edge of Davis. The property still includes the original barn and the 450-square foot homestead cabin that was ordered from the Sears catalog in the 1860's and is currently used as an AirBnB rental. The winery hosts public wine tastings on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays as well as private events. Visit their website at https://greatbearvineyards.com.

NEW: Abbey of Our Lady of New Clairvaux

Wednesday, September 28

For more than 900 years, Cistercian abbeys around the world have been oases of prayer, work, beauty, silence and light. We will visit a rural Trappist monastery in Vina (near Chico) with a restored 12th-century Chapter House. The Chapter House, with its amazing triple-arched Gothic entry, is the oldest building in the U.S. west of the Mississippi. We will tour the church, observe the monks in a brief prayer session, and have time to explore the grounds or partake in an optional wine tasting. We will have a late lunch in Orland at the Hive, with its fresh farm-to-fork dishes, a working beehive, and adjacent Bees to Blooms gift shop. $130 per person; $10 for optional wine tasting, payable at the monastery.
